Film Reviews ‘Come See Me in the Good Light’: A Brilliant Love Story about a Spoken Word Poet and Her Partner By Gregory Crofton This movie works on a lot of levels, but primarily because it’s a real love story that involves a brave person open enough to share her life as she approaches death. There don’t appear to be many “shutting the camera” off parts in this film. This unflinching lens allows us to witness two people support each other until their darkest days become, with a lot of strength and clear thought, light ones. Andrea Gibson drives the story. She is a wonderfully clear and emotional writer who has charisma and confidence and an attractive speaking voice. These things combine to make her magnetic on stage as she recites her poems. She’s a rock star who lives in an idyllic spot in Colorado (it’s fun to live there for a minute through the film) with her partner of 10 years, Megan Falley. Gibson was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2021. This movie documents some of her medical treatments and the ups and down downs that come with it. These days more LGTBQ stories are getting made and distributed, but this one seems especially important because for so long families like these have been sidelined and had to hide from the public. Gibson and Falley let us in. Direct Ryan White (Pamela, A Love Story, Goodnight Oppy, The Keepers) is skilled at telling intimate stories. His work along with Gibson’s punk style and comfort in the spotlight allows COME SEE ME IN THE GOOD LIGHT to illuminate the dark corners of life in a way that makes it all a little more understandable.
